The Institute was founded in 1992 as the answer to the challenge announced at the Global Environmental Forum in Rio de Janeiro – ‘Think globally, act locally’. We live in the epoch of unprecedented technological ascent of the human civilization. But this ascent that seems to be the peak of the power of mind at the same time shows that we are at the threshold of decline that bears the name of ecological disaster. In the process of development mankind has gained such technological capabilities of product, raw materials and energy consumption that for thousands times exceed the natural necessities of all kinds of living beings inhabiting the Earth, however, it has not managed to create mechanisms for protection and preservation of ecological balance that will form an obstacle on the way of never-ending consumption growth. Students come to Institute to get educated. Knowledge is a two-edged instrument used both for creation and destruction. It‘s necessary not only to give them this knowledge, but also let them understand that every person bears responsibility for the consequences of his own activities under the conditions of an ecological crisis. The fact that our Institute is named as the Institute for Humanities and Ecological Studies is not accidental. It has the key to the solution to many problems. Whatever profession a student chooses for himself – a landscape designer or a clothes designer, a project-manager or a finance manager, alongside the general course he studies Humanities and ecological sciences. This lays foundation for ecological world view, that is, perceptual unity of the outside world and a person as a part of this world. Every student of the Institute does not only practical training, but also ecological one, takes part in scientific projects. It makes them involved in the creating activity and builds up their faith in the power of mind and the good.
